How to Set Up Drum Microphones on a Drum Kit: Quick Guide

Drum kits often bear the grunt of the sticks and the thuds of the pedals which means the materials and parts of each piece deteriorate at a fast rate.

This also affects other instruments and devices that are often attached to the drum kit as all the vibration can damage electrical and mechanical components after a long period of use.

There are effective ways of setting up a drum kit, and it usually differs per piece of the drum kit.

  • Overhead. These are like boom microphones that use condenser microphones to capture the overall sound from the drums. Most of the time, the overhead microphones are placed just above the crash cymbals.
  • Kick. There are two treatments when it comes to installing a microphone for the kick drum: the first is by placing a microphone on a stand in front of the bass drum, and the second is by placing a cardioid microphone on a pillow inside the kick drum plus a microphone on a stand in front.
  • Toms. A small condenser microphone is placed just on the rim of both toms and is often facing downwards. These microphones are often placed on the edge to prevent the microphones from getting hit.
  • Hi-Hat. A cardioid condenser is placed on a stand and next to the Hi-Hat with settings adjusted to mitigate the sounds coming from the bass drums.
  • Snare. The microphone used for snares is often situated just outside the rim with an optional microphone placed underneath. The upper microphone is essentially placed near the head but away from the rims for it to record the different notes that can be made using the snare. Doing this also prevents interference coming off a previous resonance.
